Steam can add ping time, you sometimes get re-routed through steam servers to connect to FF servers. If steam goes down you can't launch or log into FF. Steam can sometimes have a bug where it F's up the FF file system on your computer forcing you to fully reload both. I started FFXIV through steam, I ended up having so many issues with it.
